I'm not sure what you're asking but it might be something like analyzing the way land is used do determine if there are any recurring features. For example, the region west of a city may be changing from rural (farming and agriculture) to suburban (residential, commercial, highways, etc.). The land use for this might break down to something like 24 percent residential, 32 percent commercial, 12 percent parks and recreation, eight percent roads, three percent government and the rest undeveloped.
