There is a hyphen in Spider-man but that isn't set in stone, it can go one way or the other. Spider-man may be stronger, but he really lacks the self control and discipline needed to be a true warrior, like Batman. He could probably win a fight with the Bat, but that's only on a bad day for Bruce. Batman is attentive, determined and has natural gift for combat, Spidey relies a lot on his instinct and uncanny sensory perception to figure stuff out, and he is very impulsive. Batman goes in gets it done and leaves, and doesn't much allow the personal life of Bruce to get in the way of the Dark Knight. He's a got a few years on Spidey but that is something that I would call an advantage in Batman's case, because he has focus and he is a quick thinker and plenty of experience with resilient foes.
Batman is the greatest period. In comparison to anyone or anything.

Both Batman and Spiderman have been hyphenated at various points in the comics, as well as sometimes having a "the" before their names. It all depends on a person's taste.
Both are orphans.
Both use their personal tragedy to motivate their work in spandex.
Neither one ever truly stops being their hero-self even when "off duty."
Peter dresses as Spiderman to protect those he cares about and Peter is the dominant side of his personality.
Batman was born as Bruce Wayne but reborn as Batman when his parents were killed, the only reason he takes off the Bat suit is to operate in society in ways that Batman cannot.

Not better just different, Spiderman got his powers from being bitten by a radioactive spider, Batman on the other hand has trained himself in detective work, disguise, acrobatics, chemistry, and several fighting arts, as well as being a master tactician. He has more experience and confidence than Spiderman( or practically any other hero)And he is rich.

It is a matter of opinion, really.
Batman is a reclusive uber rich gentleman with a troubled soul and that makes him appealing. Added to that is the fact that he is not a superhero in the conventional sense because he does not have super powers. Definitely Batman for me then. :)
PS: Spiders give me the creeps too.

They both share similar characteristics as do all comic book super-hero's. They loose there parents at a young age, somewhere down the line have an Epiphany and need to create justice in an unjust world. Both have elders to look up to and keep them on the proper path, spidey has aunt May and bats has Alfred the butler. Both are loners looking for love.

Spider-Man would win if it was an unexpected encounter. His spider-sense, strength and agility would overcome the Bat.
HOWEVER, given time to prepare, it's Batman, hands down. He can scheme a defeat of anyone. And he has the resources to make it come together.

Spiderman is better. He has genuine powers, and works alone, as do all real super heroes.
There is no hyphen.
