A photo would really help with identifying the insect, and if you have one, you could email it to me or post it here?
It is sometimes confusing to go by the common name for a bug - when you say 'woodlice' did you mean this insect? http://bugguide.net/node/view/46497 . Woodlice are quite small as it is and the one in the photo is only 3mm. So if your bugs are smaller than that it would rule out silverfish, because these are quite a bit larger (up to 1cm) and much prefer books and dark places.
I'm not sure what "carpet mites" or "carpet worms" refer to, but I'm guessing it's supposed to mean dust mites. It can't be dust mites either, because dust mites cannot be seen with the naked eye.
They are probably not bedbugs either. Bedbugs can be quite a bit larger than 3mm, and they are very hard to find as they hide in cracks and crevices during the day, so even in a horrible infestation you would hardly ever actually see one. Besides, they bite, while your bugs don't.
As you can see, I am kinda going by the process of elimination here because I don't have many clues to go by! My best guess is earwigs (Dermaptera) or diplurans (Diplura - see pic here http://www.ento.csiro.au/Ecowatch/Hexapods/diplura.htm). They both like warm, moist and dark places (like your airing cupboard?). The earwigs are more likely, and if they have 'pincers' at the back of their body (abdomen), they could be your bug!
Whatever it is, it is no reason to be terribly worried, and you are right, the presence of earwigs isn't necessarily related to hygeine. I don't really like using insecticide unless I really have no other choice, and I wouldn't want to spend money on a pest control company if the insects aren't causing me any undue harm/misery/bites. Try drying the cupboard out (by not airing damp clothes in it) and after a few weeks you may well notice that the bugs have gone away (hopefully outside the house - the garden is a nice place for these ones!). That should probably do the trick!
Good luck and let me know if I guessed right!

Call in the pest control. It could be a number of bugs and different sprays might stop them for a while but they'll return. Your local council will have a list of legitimate companies who can help. Being clean is the reason why they hang around so don't be embarrassed about asking someone around to help. Good luck.

like the only poster suggested it might want to correctly be mattress insects. even with the indisputable fact that that's confusing to assert have you ever performed any travelling lately? it may also be a malicious program of a few type like a flea that your domestic dog has. you could both herald a pest administration provider and ask them or get a number of those black specs and convey them and your domestic dog to the vet. For a examine up. i'd probable commence with the pest administration provider. AS to what those insects are i'd ought to work out it to be in a position to furnish you any type of an idea.

Sound like carpet mites! but could be somethig else best ring a pest controler if there are a lot of them but make sure you ring round. Prices vary so much I got a price of £268 from a national company witha flashy ad and £ 38 from a local fella in yellow pages!

they sound like bed bugs i know that they are associated with dirty places but they can also come into clean homes especially if you have recently come back from a holiday abroad its surprising how many are stowing away in suitcases and coming to live in our houses the only way to get rid of them is call an exterminator

You can get various sprays to kill creepy crawlies in pet stores, like petsworld. I doubt they are bedbugs cos bedbugs hide away, and dont crawl around. Have you got cats by the way? Our cats bring all sorts in, and a spray of flea killer always works. good luck
