I've seen discussions about forward handoffs. Can someone clarify for me the legal types of handoffs in football?

Illegal handoffs are when a ball is put forward past the line of scrimmage. You can pass the ball forward as long as it is behind the line of scrimmage.

And yes the question is about American football the first clue for thinking people was that it was in the American football section. dolts

An illegal handoff in football (USA football that is), is when the ball is handed to another player who is infront of the first player. In other words, you can only handoff to a player who is behind you, or beside you (a lateral). As far as I know, handoffs can be conducted even after crossing the line of scrimage, ...but that is one to look up......as I'm not completely certain about that.

All handoffs must be backward with the exception of those occuring in or behind the neutral zone. The forward handoff in that instance may occur when a player in that expanded netural zone turns to face his own goal line at whick point he may receive the handoff. If he's across the neutral zone or doesn't turn around completely to face his own goalline, it constitutes an illegal handoff.

2 types:
1) hand the ball off to another player who is behind or to the side of you
2) lateral the ball off to another player who is behind or to the side of you
An illegal handoff would be a direct handoff or lateral to another player who is front of you. The only time you can lateral to a person in front of you is when you are behind the line of scrimmage (then it is called a forward pass)

Watch the game on tv and listen to the announcers. Also look online for footbal slang. If you're talking about plays and the terms that are used then each team uses different terms. As far as playing linebacker, look up old clips of Mike Singletary, Dick Butkus, Lawrence Taylor and you'll learn how a linebacker plays.
