The best thing to try with a any cartridge based game that won't work (like a Game Boy game) is to clean the cartridge's contacts.
I just dip a Q-tip in some rubbing alcohol and then rub the contacts (the gold bits in the carts bottom slot) unti a Q-tip comes away clean. Best to wait for it to dry before testing, but the little bit of rubbing alcohol left on the cartridge dries in just a few seconds.
Same thing would hold for a Game Boy system that won't load games properly. Clean the system's contacts with a Q-tip, sponge, or bit of cloth dipped in rubbing alcohol.
Just note that there is a chance you could screw up your game or system doing this, I suppose. I've never had it happen, but I'm sure it could.
