Even though the first two answerers gave the right answer only one got the right reason. Gravity is only slightly different based upon your altitude above sea level, not your latitude or longitude somewhere on the globe. Earth's gravity is earth's gravity everywhere on earth. Launching from the equator means more initial velocity. The earth is not stationary, so neither is a rocket waiting to be launched. For that matter neither are you while sitting at your computer. At the equator, the surface of the earth is moving the "fastest" at approx 1,000MPH. Ever try to push a car that was out of gas? It takes less energy or work to keep it moving than it does to initially get it rolling. Well, it takes less energy to get a rocket into orbit if that rocket is already moving along at 1,000MPH than if it were spinning around by sitting on one of the Poles. All the space faring nations' launch facilities are located as close to the equator as they can get. Some have military facilities in other latitudes, but those are for different purposes and their funding provides for the added fuel costs.

i think it also has to take into account where the spacecraft is intended to go, or in the case of a satellite, where it will be "parked".
and by the way, havana is the capital of CUBA, stockholm is the capital of SWEDEN, SYDNEY is in oz and the capital of russia is MOSCOW.

#1: Havana, Cuba. The reason is that it's closer to the equator, so the spacecraft will get a nice speed boost from the rotation of the Earth.

havana, because it is closest to the equator where the gravity is lowest (by a small but still noticeable margin)
and the capital of switzerland is bern, while stockholm is the capital of sweden :)

another vote for havana. closest to the equator, fastest rotation of the earth of the 4. thats why nasa picked cape canaveral, as its one of the closest parts of the US to the equator that would logistically make sense.
