What ever the scripting language you choose be sure that:
1. Pages are search engine friendly
2. Images are less in number.
3. Always update yourself to latest technology (AJAX as for now) and implement in your project, Dont wait for somebody to boost you up to do that.
4. Learn the best practice of that scripting language and follow that for effecient code.
5. Feel free to search online for your queries.
6. Make the UI understandable and clear for novice users and robot spiders as well.
7. Avoid hard coding of constant data, configuration data, common data etc.
8. Minimize database requests as far as possible on each page. 1 at a max will be good enough.

The most important skill is to be able to search the net to find answers to your web design questions. So many people spend half their life asking for help and waiting for answers on Y!Answers when they would find better information faster if only they knew how to search the net. (I'm not complaining about _this_ post, just a million others that I have seen.)
You can save yourself a lot of time and effort if you get used to search engines early in your career, no matter which area of IT you are entering.
