If we could all be sure that Iran's use of nuclear technology was going to be for purely peaceful applications, then there is no reason why it should not have the technology...

However, in view of Iran's attitude towards the West, and its comment re wiping Israel off the map, coupled with its known support of Islamic terrorist groups, then surely it is understandable why many nations are concerned about Iran's ultimate aim in developing nuclear technology.

If it were to possess a nuclear weapon, and bearing in mind that its leaders are not always the most rational of individuals, then could we be sure it would not be tempted to use that weapon?

The possibility of such awesome destruction being in the hands of a fanatical, western hating regime, is so frightening that much of the world (including many Muslim nations) feel that Iran should not develop nuclear energy applications other than for power generation.

Incidentally, with some of the worlds biggest oil and gas reserves, why does Iran want to have nuclear power anyway, at this stage in its history?

Every one is concerned about Iran building a Nuclear Bomb and then blowing up Israel.

My thought is that they will supply nuclear material to a terrorist group (Militant) and they will build a dirty bomb.
(Today People)
When it is detonated Iran can claim that the material was stolen.
When Israel or the US retaliates it looks like they are the aggressor. Nuclear World War

Now why should Iran have ANY nuclear material if there is ANY chance this could happen? oh I guess it is their "Right" to choose that path and we should just trust them....Yea ...Right. and I can't believe Iran's people are letting their leaders do this to them.I am glad I will not be their for the fall out.

Because it's possible to stop it. They also shouldn't have access to genetic manipulation facilities or chemical refinement, but the UN doesn't oversee those. They have a humoungous dissident population and an unstable theocracy. If I had the choice I'd keep violent schitzophreniacs from legally purchasing guns, especially if they didn't need one. Iran is an energy producer, the export oil why would they need a dangerous and highly regulated materials for an energy program?

no issues with Iran having nuclear energy..its after all every soverign nations natural right..but the technology for making nuclear energy is a dual use technology and can be used also for making bombs...and given Irans unstable and distured hisroty and fanatic+fundamentalist islamic nature and a rough leader....a nuclear bomb in there hands is madness

That's actually a very good question.

If the superpowers can build their stock of weapons, Iran should have the right to build up on the weapons they choose. The trouble is, what the world perceives as "harmful" to the environment. As if the bombs dropped in Iraq and Afghanistan are biodegradable...

It comes down to hypocrisy, and the world making sure that Iraq will not have the last word in a conflict at the push of a button

Because it will be a "potential weapon" in the hands of a regime which is not under US-control plus is unfriendly to Israel.

I haven't heard so far that anybody complained about Turkey's plans to build nuclear energy plants...

Because they're a rogue state lead by a wacko President, who will use nuclear weapons to threaten Isreal, the only true democracy in the entire Middle East. They won't be happy until they get to nuke someone, which will force us to obliterate them from the face of the planet.
