Yes. the history books will call this the modern era, in the same way that they refer to the Middle Ages. There will be a significant shift into a new way of thinking, and then a new term will be created. We are still in the modern era, but about to leave it.

One would consider "Modern" a property - an item would have modernistic properties as a universal. A universal may have instances, known as its particulars. For example, the type dog (or doghood) is a universal, as are the property modern (or modernness) and the relation betweenness (or being between). Any particular dog, modern thing, or object that is between other things is not a universal, however, but is an instance of a universal. That is, a universal type (doghood), property (modernness), or relation (betweenness) inheres a particular object (a specific dog, modern thing, or object between other things).
One might suggest that as we move further through time and space types of things lose properties and other new things gain properties that they only did not have because they did not exist prior to their invention. A modern item today would not be considered a modern item in 20 years time.
The moment we live in holds the property of being modern.

G'day Golden Heifer,
Thank you for your question.
Modernism is already seen by some as having outlived its era. Postmodernism claims to be replacing it.
Postmodernism is an idea that has been extremely controversial and difficult to define among scholars, intellectuals, and historians, as it connotes to many the hotly debated idea that the modern historical period has passed. Nevertheless, most agree that postmodern ideas have affected philosophy, art, critical theory, literature, architecture, design, interpretation of history, and culture since the late 20th century. The term defies easy definition, but generally comprises the following core ideals:
* A continual skepticism towards the ideas and ideals of the modern era, especially the ideas of progress, objectivity, reason, certainty & personal identity, and grand narrative in general (see Counter-Enlightenment)
* The belief that all communication is shaped by cultural bias, myth, metaphor, and political content.
(see Cultural relativism)
* The assertion that meaning and experience can only be created by the individual, and cannot be made objective by an author or narrator.
(see Existentialism)
* Parody, satire, self-reference, and wit.
(see No hugging, no learning)
* Acceptance of a mass media dominated society in which there is no originality, but only copies of what has been done before.

Post modern is getting a bit old now isn't it? Shouldn't we be using post post modern by now?
Actually every age thinks of themselves as 'modern' and somehow better than what has gone on before, its more a statement of ego than time.

Historically, there are classic things, what we call a classic, it remains, but everything is changing everyday, and as technology advances, it is more quickly everyday, what today is novelty tomorrow will be old fashion, in every field. Just read a little any history book, and you will know how people change according the time living and where people is living.

Many call today post-modern.
This is, i think, the term you may be after.
However, both terms have coined by the 'west'.
