as long as the engine has been off at least 15 minutes you can check your oil level.i usually check it when the engine hasnt been running early in the morning just to be careful about hotspots.but it can be checked in 15 minutes after you have turned off engine.a good synthetic oil is great for any engine and with thease oils you only have to change the oil every 5000 miles. i use castrol 10w-30 in my suvs.a 03 suburban with a 315 hp engine and a 05 toyota highlander with 240 hp.mobil has a 15k oil but if your engine uses or burns oil keep a check on the level.

you check your oil when the engine has cooled - otherwise it's being used to lubricate the working parts and has not come back down - you will end up over filling if you do it when it is hot.
as for what kind of oil - check on your oil cap, it should tell you. if you have high milage you may want to switch to an oil engineered more for high milage (valvoline max life has been around the longest). if you are leaking and don't want to fix the leak, a thicker oil will leak slower. but if you are not leaking, do not change the weight of the oil from what is recommended - there's a reason that's the weight recommended. i would guess that on a saturn it's 10w-30. that's the most common in smaller vehicles. you are probably not a synthetic, but if you want to change you should do a full engine flush before changing to full or semi synthetic

I only check it 5' after switching off engine.
As I live in Greece, I'm not familiar with your model ; however a semisynthetic oil will do.
If you live in a hot state, you may use 20/40 or 15/40, or 20/50. If in a cool one, you may use 10/40, 05/40 or oo/40. The last one if on Winter, temp. drops well under oF.
But an average would be a 10/40 semisynthetic for all climats.

You verify the oil point while the engine is chilly and ideally till now u bypass everywhere the 1st time of the day. occasion is right till now you goto artwork then get in the vehicle and rancid you bypass. For what variety of oil, 5w30 or 40 could be sufficient.
