Because they want you to act your age, the reason why they want you to stay a child is because they never want to tell us the difficulties of life so that we find it ourselves how difficult life can be yet they want us to act our ages so that we're wise enough at the time to see all the wrongs of life

To the 1st few answers no, no, no -- THAT'S WHAT'S MEANT BY CHILDISH. To the next couple answers above mine -- yes, that's it!!!
The reason older people tell you to stay young as long as you can is because being an adult or being grown up is VEY, VERY HARD !!!!!!! They want you to have as much time to be free to explore your inborn gifts and find your niche in life b4 you have to worry about making your own way, a time when most people have to give up their dreams in order to put a roof overhead and food on the table (a table you'll also have to buy). They hope you'll have the time to explore the world and find the 'work" that makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning becuz you love it, not flipping burgers for minimum wage your whole life (just an example)!!!
To the 2nd part of your question: they want you to learn from your mistakes and that's part of growing.
If this is the best answer, I'd appreciate your vote. Thank you !

There is a vast difference between staying young and behaving in a childish manner.
We (I am one of the old ones) think you should remain young at heart in your thinking. You should experience life before settling down. Try a couple of jobs to see what you really like. Travel to other cities to get a taste of a different culture. Have lots of friends from different walks of life. Enjoy yourself before tying yourself down with a house, a family, bills, and a dog.
However, you should not behave like you did when you were a child. Thoughtless and inconsiderate. Irresponsible. Whiny.
Keep that great sense of wonder at all the new things in life, but remember you will soon be the caregiver for them.

because there is a huge difference between acting young and being childish. when they say stay a child (which i've never heard, i've always heard stay young) they mean don't act like an old fart, mostly they mean to hold on to your youthful ideals. acting childish is not what they mean.

Well, I'm not really old, but this makes sense to me. These people who say that, have "already" been there. They remember wishing they could be older so they could do certain things, and go different places. And when they tell you to "grow up" it's because you've just done something someone "your" age is too old to do, or should know "better" than to do. Hope this answered your question......sonny...hahaha! (kidding)

Well, Pull my finger, they want you to have the fun of youth without the adult worries we all face (bills, family, etc), but they want you to understand there is a time to be serious.

Nice point.
It's a vicious cycle that doesn't seem to make sense.
