They are most often made of glass, but sometimes of stone, including marble. I suspect they were called that because stone cutters would make balls as a way to learn their craft.

they are ancient roman and greek toy played by children and adults used to play and bet. but to answer your question they used to be made of marble in ancient times and that is where the name originates from.......hope this helps.
