this may sound daft but place conkers around the house in various places as spiders hate these and this will stop them making your house a new home

Sorry.. you cant!
I moved into an old house in a rural area a year ago and was totally freaked out by the monsters in my house... after a huge clean out the real biggies seemed to leave but we have never managed to stop them finding their way in.. surprisingly though, having had a complete heart stopping phobia of spiders my entire life, I have found that over the last months I am becoming desensitised to them and whilst I still hate everything about them, I am not running screaming up the street at the sight of one!
If you live near fields, keep all doors/windows closed at harvest time, thats when their at their worst!!
Good luck, I'm going to google this conker theory!

Like all living things, spiders can only survive where they can find food. You might like to consider that your spiders are eating all sorts of things that you don't want in your house.
The traditional solution to repel insects and spiders is to use a product containing citronella. These products are usually candles or slow-burning coils usually used outdoors whilst camping or barbequeing. However citronella can be bought as a preparation in a fragrant oil from many chemists and this can be wiped around window frames, for example, to deter spiders. The spiders don't like the stuff much (their sense of taste is located on the tips of their legs) and avoid it.
You will not eradicate spiders from your house though you can limit them to places where you wont notice them.
Cats do eat a few spiders. They are crunchy on the outside and runny in the middle. Spiders taste of nuts.

They will, you are never more than a few foot away from a spider or creepy crawly of some sort, the fact is that there's nothing you can do apart from get over your fear of these poor little tiny creatures who are 10 times more afraid of you than you are of them. Do you want to borrow my trantula? his names erny and he's a rose knee. Hes not poisioness, and hes not very fast and he'll sit happily on your hand for aout 20 minutes before he'll want to go wandering up your sleve. He doesn't eat much, and only needs his tank cleaning once a week of poop. and he dont make any noise so he wont keep u awake at night.

Spiders set up webs where there is a draft from the outside. Anywhere you see a web you can bet there is airflow and a good supply of flies. Seal the drafts and make it less enticing for them, removing their food source. Ensure your screens fit tightly, especially in areas lit up inside at night. Although unsightly, they are harmless and are just there to trap insects and eat. Outside you will have to keep brooms handy and remove the webs regularly, but if the webs are out of sight, remember they are sort of mother nature's way of trapping flies that would otherwise be driving you nuts.

I live outside of town, but even in town they show up. There is a product that will help, they are called hedge balls, they are about the size of a large orange, but are green and bumpy. They have no small that you can smell but spiders do not like them. You can buy them in the produce department at the store. You can't get rid of them but you can Chase them out of the house and make it so they won't come back in. Oh I almost forgot, the headg ball will dry up and you will have to get new ones. but they last about one year. Good luck

I am so glad that you asked that question. Just looking at the word spider, makes the hair's on the back of my neck stand up. I am going to try the conker theory, as most of the answers seem to be advocating conkers.

I'd leave em alone if you don't live somewhere that has venomous spiders? On the other hand the bigger ones are a bit freaky-I have to do the card and jar trick with them. I think they just like somewhere warm and dry to live. Try getting a cat; mine loves eating 'piders..

There's a product called SPIDER-NOT that works great. I don't know of anywhere locally that it's available, but you can find it on the internet. Just type in "SPIDER-NOT" and you'll find the Nott company in Pleasant Valley, NY 12569. It not only kills spiders, but prevents future web-building. I hope it works for you. It sure does for me. They creep me out, too.

Apparently spiders don't like the smell on conkers. So go grab as many as you can and strew them around the house
