I have the same problem! Software supplied with the laptop doesn't support burning DVDs (I think I can burn data DVDs but not videos).
Nero 7 is a reliable software which does all you will probably want and more. It's not very expensive (around $60 for the downloadable version and you can get Nero 6 still for a lot less).
There are others available, some of which are shareware at around $30. Personally I would go with one which gets good reviews and is recommended widely!
Video DVD Maker Free is freeware, however. The Pro version is $30. http://www.videodvdmaker.com/

If you have windows media player, which is free, it will take you step by step in burning your CD's. On my computer, when I insert a music CD, a box comes up that tells me what I want to do, which is to first rip the music. This puts it on your computer. The next step is to burn the music to a blank CD. One of the top programs for doing this is Nero, if you don't already have windos media player.

First what kind of DVD's are you trying to burn? Are you trying to burn movies from one DVD to a blank DVD? Or are you trying to burn Data from your computer onto a blank DVD?
If you are trying to burn movies (Encrypted movies) from a DVD onto a blank DVD then try DVD shrink or DVD decryter software. They will rip the DVD movie onto your hard drive or if you have Nero DVD Shrink will burn it onto a blank DVD.
If you are trying to data or not encrypted movies from your hard drive you should be able to find free software on the web to burn DVD's, again just google DVD burning software.
If you purchase a program like Nero 7 it comes with all the software yo will need to burn to your DVD's ( It will not burn encryted movies, that is where you will need DVD Shrink)

It is not quite that simple. Windows media player has instructions how to copy to DVD.
Nero is a good program to use for this as well.
Windows movie maker also has instructions on DVDs
Read and learn as most of have to do. It is not difficult but it is not the same as VCD. Be sure you do have DVD blanks and not regular discs.

Nero is a good program to burn songs, movies, etc. You could buy it or you could just dowload it from Limewire. ;)
