After a rebellion in the north William of Normandy ordered everyone in York executed.
In 1297 William Wallace led a Scots army to York where he executed everyone he found from the elderly to newborn babies (although they don't put this event in Brave Heart).

That's two for a start, I'm sure there are more!

I took my son William to York and he liked it, especially the Railway Museum. I didn't know that about W Wallace though. Braveheart is a very romanticised view of what actually happened.(sorry, I know this isn't a helpful answer!)

William is a corruption of the French Guillame as I understand it - perhaps, due to the large amount of wars between France and England in the Middle Ages, coupled with Scotland's own cordial relationships with the French, it was seen as a name to give your child if you were anti-English?
