Im really peeved at the fact the harder I work and the more I earn, the more I get taxed and feel "penalised" for contributing 25% of my wage to the government, when there are several (alot more but you get the jist) people whom I personally know have never done a days work and are miles better off than me, I live in the southwest and earn way above the average wage but cant afford a mortgage or a car for that matter, when people I know who are on the doll get help with paying for driving lessons very nice accomadtion and countless amounts of grants and such, the latest coment to get to me was come and see my new place it'll ONLY cost £40 in a taxi, I wish i had £40 to waste on Taxi fair like my unemployed friend does. Surley those of us that work hard should be rewarded and the unemployed should be penalised for NOT contributing? I would like to know what you all think about this?

I understand completely what you are saying and it is very hard to accept that some unemployed people are taking a lend of the hard working man by bucking the system so to speak.

In my previous life as an Adult Careers Guidance adviser I saw this injustice on a daily basis. However, many of the long term unemployed are simply unemployable for one reason or another. Take for example the illiterate adult unable to read or write they become so disenchanted with their lot that many just give up and go with the flow of unemployment. The education system has let them down badly.

You also get those who are completely dysfunctional and no matter how many government training courses they go on they will never work. And so the cycle goes on and on.

The only way for us as a society is to help these people realise their potential by giving them the opportunity to learn the basic skills of reading and writing which will at least give them the confidence to seek work. However the whole unemployment system needs revisiting to reset the existing status quo.

Are you claiming family tax credits by the way? If not you ought. And whilst I understand that it is a nightmare trying to claim for them, but you as a tax payer should take full advantage of them if you are entitled.

Good luck and chin up and I hope things improve for you.

"I live in the southwest and earn way above the average wage but cant afford a mortgage or a car for that matter"

Solve your own problems before you blame others. Take a look at your finances and start living within your means.

I work with people who make exactly the same amount I do, for some reason a number of them are always in financial trouble (some even having wages garnished)... I have both a mortgage and a car, I just try to live within my means.

Because in principal if you get these people off benefits and into working society then they can help contribute as you do. In turn more general prosperity and thus you would pay less taxes.... This is an ideal, there are lots of things that can go wrong and does; people cheat the system, don't want to work, cant work because of illness, illegal immigrants that are not allowed to work.

When my husband was unemployed we walked everywhere to get our shopping. We got paid every 2 weeks & it was a struggle.
My next door neighbour use to get a taxi & was always skint the day after being paid, hence always borrowing off me.She would send her son for a few slices of bread & marg plus cornflakes.
She always sent a bowl so she did not have to give them back.
I use to get annoyed however i could not deprive her kids of breakfast. Her son use to be really embarressed.Which made me feel quilty for how I felt.I was glad when we moved.

sometimes people cant work due to illness both my mum and step dad are unable to work because of cancer but they certainly dont have £40 to spend on a taxi. how ever my dad is perfectly well to work but is to lazy to and lives off the government and it isnt right. i can see what you are saying if people choose not to work then they dont deserve to get help but if there is a genuine reason for the person not working then i do agree with them getting help.

Because this government needs to URGENTLY overhaul the Welfare State system and ensure that it is only for a short time that people get paid. Welfare/dole/etc. are NOT for life - they should only be for a year at most to help people get back on their feet.

I am sick of it too. Why do we slog our guts out for these wasters? I have to say that I am very happy NOT to have any friends on the dole.

I compleatly agree those morons who think they can get away with just living off the state really p**s me off paying out for them to live. they should be penalised for not working and contributing to our country rather than draining it of vast amounts of money

Because the government wants to keep as many Americans as possible, dependent on their government everything. That way, the government can be in greater control of people's private lives. By the way, here's where your hard-earned tax money has secretly been going!...
