As in a mailbox in the street, as in a red royal mail box, as in a box anyone can post letters etc in. Is that a clear enough description for you.

Are you in the UK? 'cos if you are it's treason! A crime against the crown.(Royal Mail). Punishable (in theory) by the death penalty! Though I doubt if it would come to that. In any other country I guess if you were caught you could expect a whopping fine if not prison.

This is quite a serious charge and can carry a sentence of up to five years for a first offence.
The actual offence would be setting fire to Her Majesty's mail,as well as possibly Arson to Government Property.

There's no such things a public mailbox. It may be utilized by the public, but all mailboxes are owned by the government- even if you buy yours at home depot- it's still technically not yours. Destroying government property results in high fines, jail time, or both.

Well that is a terrible thought, but I should think it would be very difficult to set fire to anyway, for one it is metal I think, for two if you put matches in they would go out because of no airflow.
It also would not be a good idea as you would not get that cheque in the post from Readers Digest, as it would of got burnt in the mail.
I saw some kids putting cream cakes in our local postbox. people never fail to amaze me of the bad they will do.

The charges would be criminal damage and arson and you are tampering with a public service too. The penalty ... you would very likely go to jail unless you had a very good defence lawyer who could find an administrative loop hole to get you off.

In the old country you would be put into stocks and admail would be dragged across your private parts..sharp end...!
This, however, has been stopped due to the invention of spiders!
In the civilised world the penalty would be firing squad :(
