its white primer paint

Can you peel the carpet back to the point of the stain? If so, great. Water based primer will come up fairly easily, using cold water and a sponge several times, but ensure the carpet and any underlay are allowed to dry out completely or you will have more problems than a stain. Depending on the fibre, if you have extra carpet, you can lay another piece over the stain, use a very sharp knife to cut a square down through the existing carpet, and replace the section. If it's a high traffic area, expect the seams of the repair job to show up before long. Is there nice hardwood under the carpet?? If so, toss the carpet. It's just a dustcatcher. use runner or area rugs if you must.

Josh - I once spilt white gloss all over the middle of my lounge carpet. After scooping up all the excess I could I dabbed the remainder with a cold sponge. This did nothing, so I sprayed a whole bottle of Vanish Spray in the hope it would do just that - but that seemed to make it worse.

Eventually I emptied a bottle of Turps onto the paint and scrubbed for ages. The paint slowly came off, but left a huge bleached stain where the paint was.

Basically, mate...you're fu***d !!

It depends on how large the spot is and how deeply it has penetrated. If it isn't too large or very deep, you may be able to remove it with scissors-- small type like cuticle scissors work best. If it is so deep that you think removing it with scissors will leave a noticeable hole, try removing it with a paint removal product like "OOPS" or, if you already have some, try lacquer thinner first. You might even try hot water & detergent... this will work on some latex primers. With any of these, you may have to make repeated applications and allow it to soak. Covering it with aluminum foil, bottle cap, or jar lid will give the solvent more time to work on the paint before it evaporates.

It should come out with cold water (thats if its a water based primer). Blot the paint with kitchen roll from the outside in and then do the same with a clean cloth wet with cold water. Takes a bit of time but cheaper than a new carpet!

Removing paint from carpets is best left to a carpet cleaning company, why:
Type of carpet structure
Type of Paint
and how long as it been there
Your local carpet cleaning company will advise you and I also advise you to get in touch with your house insurance company and see if they will pay for this repair
Good look
P.S.
Don't use thinner or turps as this will no doubt bring out the colour of the carpet

Primer is usually oil based, and therefore very hard to remove. Buy new carpet, and be more careful next time.

Try either Goof-Off or Oops. Test spot an area first to make sure it wont discolor the carpet. It may take 2 applications, but either works pretty well.

SHAVE IT
This works, just take a sharp razor and shave the paint off the top.
It shaves the paint off in flakes, not gauging out like scissors would do.
Good luck with this!

sure, it's easy.. go to your local grocery store and rent a Rug Doctor for one day. Fill it with turpentine. Turpentine is a solvent which will dissolve paint. Several passes with the Rug Doctor should do the trick. Lean back and light a cigarette and marvel at the wonders of the mechano-chemical age.
