Microsoft Corp is investigating a malicious program that attempts to turn off the company's newly released anti-spyware software for Windows computers.
Stephen Toulouse, a Microsoft security program manager, said yesterday that the program, known as "Bankash-A Trojan," could attempt to disable or delete the spyware removal tool and suppress warning messages.
It also may try to steal online banking passwords or other personal information by tracking a user's keystrokes.
To be attacked, Toulouse said a user would have to be fooled into opening an email attachment that would then start the malicious program.
He said the company had not seen any evidence so far that the program was widespread.
Toulouse said Redmond-based Microsoft was recommending that users who believed they might be infected should use anti-virus software, such as products made by Symantec Corp. or McAfee Inc., to try to remove it.
Microsoft has said it plans to offer its own paid anti-virus software, but it has not yet set a date for that release.
Microsoft AntiSpyware is being offered in beta or test form, and about six million people have downloaded it so far.
The free product aims to help users find and remove spyware, or programs that can secretly monitor a users' internet surfing habits, spew out relentless pop-up ads and slow computer performance. ---

Its amazing how many people dont know ANYTHING about spyware. Spyware has been on the increase in the last few years. Spyware works when you visit most sites and the site downloads a cookie or such like a tracker (a small bit information about the person's log in details or surfing habits). This was only meant innocently at first but obivously the crimnals use this to their advantage and there is also bad spyware as there is good.
Without a spyware scanner it can really slow your pc right down. To resolve this visit http://www.download.com as they have a dedicated section on this.
Best free ones are Ad-Ware and Spybot
The best ones you have to pay for are Spyware Doctor, Webroot are among the best and have preventive .
It is always adiviseable to delete your tempoary cookies as this will remove most. Go to tools and click on internet options and Delete Cookies which is in the General options to the left hand corner of the box. Another good tip is not open any emails you are'nt sure where they originated from as once you open it they know that its a valid working email and send more junk emails and you will probably get more spyware this way.
If you have a good Anti- Virus and firewall always helps to cut down getting most of it!

Spyware attack is different from Virus.
Anti viruses donot check spywares..
It , unlike a virus, is not deadly to your PC but may deaden down its speed and performance ..it may invade your privacy and security by sending your personal sensitive information on your computer to it's server (hacker).
You can use any Anti-Spyware like Norton's AntiSpyware
or Spyware Doctor.
They also provide realtime protection from hackers and pop-ups.
