I kind of remember when it was simply the top team in the National League and in the American League automatically playing each other without league playoffs. In what year did the playoffs begin?

League championship playoffs began in 1969.
Divisional playoffs began in 1995.
Prior to 1969, there were no divisions, so the top team from each league won the pennant. With expansion and the addition of new teams, it became necessary to divide the leagues into divisions and have playoffs to decide the league championship.
