That, I think, would depend on which country your character comes from, since naming conventions varied from place-to-place. Also remember that, in the case of surnames, they often indicated what sort of trade or job the person in question was involved in. Example: a person with the surname "Fletcher" meant that the person in question had a job fletching arrows (attaching feathers to the ends of arrows to make sure that they flew straight).
