I've taken all available biology courses for this year and, sadly, haven't touched a petri dish yet, let alone agar.

It's used to grow bacteria colonies and such, agar is the nutrient base.

Afterwards they incinerate them, just in case you helped to grow a nice high population of some nasties, that's the best bit.

I recently did an experiment in which my lab partner passed a cotton swab on the outside of his face and then passed the swab over the agar gel and was incubated for 24 hours. We sort of got to see how much bacteria is on us at all times. Agar is anutrient medium for bacteria. It comes from red algae.

petri dishes are used for encasing the nutrient agar medium.agar gel is a gelling agent used to make a solid gel and it is mixed with the nutrient media prepared to culture micro-organisms
