You can let microsoft handlethat for you,,,sorta,,,in internet security settings and junk, set for as little funcionalty as you can deal with, but other than that, spybot,ad-aware,mebee yahoo toolbar has it now.
Best plan is a good strategy, backups after each clean boot, 2 CDs rotation. That way when you do get a hoser tramp virus, wipe the HDD re-installfrom an image disk that was made when everything worked.
Lotsa that garbage gets in the Registry and other places, the old scholl way of fixing is to trash all the bad and start fresh, with backup schedule this is allot less labor intesive than just loseing all data because you trust one software to proetect another software, eventually somethin is gonna fail. So back it up.

I'm not sure what anti-virus program you are using but I have been using avast home anti-virus for 3 years this is the best free antivirus scanner of ever used (this is a free program) because it has a boot-time scan. I've used this boot-time scanner in my computer business and has worked great. The Scanner runs after you reboot and before windows starts up. Make sure you uninstall your current anti-virus scanner before installing avast, it will ask to run a boot time scan when you install it.

Try Adaware.com. it will have some mirror sites to download from. It is free and not trial version so if yo see a site that wants money for a full version try somewhere else.

on your yahoo toolbar there is an orange/gold circle that kind of looks like a bulls eye. click on that and you will have norton antispyware protection. i run it daily and you would be surprised at how much faster my system works.
good luck and safe surfing!

By visiting this link: http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3003-8022_4-10399602.html?tag=tab_rev
Download it there.
Install it and make sure to regularly update it. Because an Ad-aware program that is not updated for new definitions is as good as no program at all.
