I would recommend spending a weekend in a B&B in Poole in Dorset. Then you could buy a local map and travel along the coast all weekend buying local papers for each town. These tend to give you a good idea of the niceness of an area. Also try some of the local pubs and you can see what it is like by talking to the publicans too. go out in the night and the day.

There are some places off the motorway towards brighton that are in the country, near enough to brighton and motorway and not too built up.

Also see if there are any community websites and ask local councils to send you details of their towns too.

good luck - maybe you could rent for 6 months before deciding to move there for good.

i'd favor to assert Brighton, because it quite is extra south than south east. even with the indisputable fact that that's in elementary words 50 miles from London, plus that's on the seashore! you could truly make friends in Brighton, even strangers. that's truly decrease priced (no longer lifeless less expensive). good nightlife. human beings have activities each and every of the time. I lived there for 5 years, and my melancholy develop into particularly cured through time I moved out! 20% of electorate are scholars (various universities and faculties). I truly have numerous friends there, so in case you do pick to seem at Brighton, enable me understand and that i will positioned you in contact with many helpers!

If you follow the M4 between Reading and London there are a few picturesque Riverside towns and villages, Marlow, Maidenhead, etc....... they have some expensive areas and some cheaper areas but both offer the same scenic locations. You are also only 20 mins from London or Reading Centres.

How about the isle of wight....you have lots of countryside, beach if you want it and nightlife if thats your thing. I am the main breadwinner on an average wage and my husband only has seasonal work. We can afford it, although the only draw back is getting back off the island to go anywhere as the ferry is dear.

Don't do it...

The south is full of southerners! Move to the North - despite all reports to the contrary its not grim. You and your wife's average wage down south will make you more than comfortable up north!

I love Weymouth but the houses can be quite expensive. There are quite a few villages nearer inland that are a bit cheaper and are only a short drive away from the beach!
