When it comes to forgiveness and compassion, in spite of all they been through. They beat us to death every day of the week and 3 times on Sunday. We say we are not vendictive people, and have compassion, and the power of forgiveness. But next to the Amish it would be like putting a dingy next to an aircraft carrier. And they are not the dingy.

Every community will have its strengths and its weaknesses, and the Amish have a complex culture that should neither be condemned nor praised in its entirety. No culture is perfect at the best or worst of times.

But this week, it has to be said, they taught the world a lesson. In reaching out to the family of a man who caused their own community such violent harm, knowing it seems that such a thing harms those closest to the perpetrator as well as those closest to the victims, and spreading the love of the god they believe in with a universality that resembles their view of him, they have shown us how to genuinely "turn the other cheek" and join hands with every heart in pain. Tiny lights in a dark world indeed.

Like I have said before " If we were more like them and less like us this world would be a much better place!" I have lived near them and they make me feel so humble.
