u have a certain number of shapes (triangles, shapes etc), that are different sizes etc. and u have to arrange the shapes in a certain way to create a picture (eg a swan). does anyone know what this game/puzzle is called?

Yes. It's called a tangram - you have a picture of let's say a rabbit and then you fullit in with the different shapes like triangles, squares, etc. We use to play this growing up in school all the time.
