Assuming you are talking about a desktop:
Fist you need to know if you have a free slot in you mother board to put and additional memory. Also how many memory slots your mother Board has.
Are the 512 MB you have already in one or two memory ram modules?
You could buy a 1 GB memory RAM module and take your 512 MB out or you could buy a 512 MB additional module.
You need to know if your mother board accepts DDR memory, if so, if it is PC 2700 333 mhz or 4200 533 mhz or any other type of memory.
You can also take your complete computer to a technician and he recommend exactly what to do.

Check in your PC documentation, it should state the maximum amount of RAM your system can handle. If you have 2 X 256mb of RAM installed, you can just remove the RAM and insert 2 X 512mb or 2 X 1GB of RAM. If you have 3 SIMM slots you can insert 3 X 256mb RAM giving you 768mb of RAM or 3 X 512mb, giving you 1536mb. Alternatively 3 X 1GB, giving you 3GB of RAM. You need to check the type of motherboard you have and how much RAM of what type it will take. There are RIMMS,SIMMS, DIMMS.

You will need to add RAM to your system - the dealer from whom you bought the system should be able to supply RAM chips, and advice you on the type of RAM you need.

if you hv 512MB capacity and the PC/Notebbok uses one module to get this capacity, plz buy another module of same capacity of 512MB and install it.....if you original capacity of 512MB is made up of two modules, each of 256MB capacity, then you hv to check whether youhv additional two slots to add more modules..if you hv two slots more, than you hv to add 2 pcs of 256MB to get more capacity.
