Unlocked phone means that the phone will accept SIM card from any mobile carrier no matter what carrier had provided the phone at the first place. Unlocking is around 10 pounds in the UK.

Yes, provided that the type of bands that the phone receives are used by the carrier you choose.

I purchased a sony-ericcson phone off of e-bay. My wireless provider does not offer this type of phone. I took the sim card from my old phone, placed it in the new one and I was good to go.

Unlocking means your phone does not make any difference.

it means you can put any provider's sim card... it's not limited to one provider only
