I always thought placebos were fake pills you take alieve psychological need for pills to make you better. So, cough medicines I think are best. Sometimes it's better just to take alot of vitamin C and fluids and wait it out. Other times, it's just allergies. You should really be asking your doctor.

All these meds work only when the cough is triggered from the brain. No use if it is triggered from the throat itself. Cough associated with Upper Respiratory Tract Infection should be managed by a combination of antihistamine and decongestant.
A cough without any underlying cause will stop its own in a week.

Codeine and some older antihistamines in the Cough drops elevate mood and the patient feel better. Codeine is addictive.

I would have to say overall Dextromethorphan is best, it's non habit forming and it seems to be cheaper. I would see about seeking some herbal remedies maybe.

For me, dextromethorphan. Some people do well with the Tessalon pearls. Anything with guafenisen is also good.
