what are the characteristics of an effective digital storytelling?

Well I think the key component to an effective digital story would be interactivity, wouldn't you agree? Otherwise what is the point of using a digital medium if your story is static, you may as well be reading a traditional book. For an effective digital story though, the interactivity of that story however should not be an either a, b, c choice,if then then this, but something more random which no matter how many times you visit the site or read the story it can never go down the same path. A digital story that could work on principles of chaos theory would be ideal, but having to program for it would be less than ideal if not down right impossible.
