A sharks primary and pretty much only weapon is its teeth. Plus a shark maneuvers in a different set of axis than a dolphin does. The shark's tail fin is vertical relative to its body where a dolphin has a horizontal fluke. This allows the dolphin to do things requiring too much energy for a shark to do. Sort of like a cessna 172 compared to an acrobatic plane. Also, some dolphins can send a sonar burst out that will stun fish maikng them easy prey. Dolphins DO have teeth of their own, too. And, most fish for some reason are afraid of air bubbles. This aspect is what allows other marine mammals to "bubble net" themselves a fish dinner. Odds are though if the shark has entered "frenzy" phase there isn't much short of death that will stop it from attacking and feeding. Also, only a few species of sharks are in any way "pack" or "school" type fish. All dolphins live in groups, so there's strength in numbers.

I don't know if they are afraid but I do know that a dolphin is about the only other animal in the sea who will attack and at times kill sharks. The dolphin will head butt the shark at a high speed injuring it's internal organs. This is usually done to protect their young.

Statement: You may or may not accept my answer.

I believe dolphins emit an ultra 'sonic' wave (....I wouldnt call it 'sound')......that the sharks could pick up...... similar to the ultra sound whistle that you blow and your dog could hear but we humans do not....... and I believe this ultra waves so irritate the sharks that they could go nuts!

All fish have a super-sensitive 'line' along their body that could temperature, pressure & other 'senses' changes ( we humans have 5 senses......may be including a 6th..... but todate I dont believe anyopne has definitively found out how many senses fished have......... sharks could detect any changes in their environment much bother than other fishes.......... this is ntural tothem to survive as a predator........

...........so this supersensitivity aids them in predation...... but it also 'hurts' them in their receipt of outside sources of sensation!

Take note then....... the living world has always ....... the "yin" and "Yan".......a Chinese belief ( the Koreans & Japanese believe that too!).......... you got to balance the 2........the sharks know that too!

...........and thats why they avoid dolphins.........believe it or not!
