I seem to recall the term "4x4" used in truck commercials in the '90s. How come they don't use that term anymore? I think they use "4 wheel drive" instead...

4x4 has a reputation of being gas guzzling monsters that kill innocent children and destroy the ozone layer.

4 wheel drive is a nice little Audi A4 saloon that wouldn't hurt a fly.

Really it comes down to marketing strategies when people here 4x4 they think of a monster truck for the bush now with soo many yuppie mobiles around 4 wheel drive is less abrasive for people to handle.

The term 4x4 became associated with off road vehicles, which don't appeal to the urban buyers. So they just came up with 4WD and emphasized on the saftey aspects rather than the off road capabilities. In most commercials anyway.
