i'm currently a freshman in junior college and plan on transferring to a 4 year university ( berekeley or USF). i've been debating on whether or not to become a nurse prac. or OB/GYN. I understand that to become a ob/gyn requires more years of school..what is my best option? & please add any more information you feel will help me with this decision such as pros&cons. THANKS & GOD BLESS!

You have some researching to do. First, check the laws in the state where you want to practice. Some states require close supervision of a Nurse Practitioner by a licensed physician. This may or may not inhibit you by allowing you to only work in a way that a doctor wants you to. Second, you need to check with your JC and the university you may want to transfer to. Some universities accept SOME JC courses and some don't. Be sure the classes you take are transferable AND be sure the university you choose will accept the transferred classes. Although RNP will take less time, you will have less options in how and where you practice. I vote for you to be a OB/GYN. It's a long, hard road but if you are dedicated and have the money or ability to earn money, go for it. (Remember, malpractice insurance will be a major expense once you are licensed to practice regardless which one you choose.) Good Luck!!!

Have the best of both worlds..get your R.N. then go back to school for 18 mo and become an OB/GYN nurse practioner. I am also a R.N.

Do you want to deliver babies? Check with your state laws to see if nurse practioners can deliver. Some states won't allow them to.
