This question is miscategorized. It should be under religion and spirituality. God created the earth. When was our planet created ? According to religion, the earth is at least 6,000-10,000 yrs. old. According to astronomical cycles of rocks it tells us that earth is at least 25 million yrs old.

Scientists accept an age for the earth which is four and a half billion yrs (Scientific American V261p 90(6) Aug, 1989) The two major branches of Creationisms are old Earth which accepts the scientific answer and young Earth which prefers an answer on the order of 6,000 or 10,000 yrs. There is a number of young Earth arguments.

These days, science uses radioactive methods as the proimary way of dating the Earth. We could check if a radioactive method is consistent with the deeper-is-as-older rule or check if several radioactive methods are consistent with each other. Or we could find a different clock entirely. But we don't need a clock to know that something is old. One way would be to look for known astronomical cycles in rocks. We could just count rock layers or ice layers. We could check if short lived radioactive are found on Earth. Or we could look at the question of stars being more than 10,000 light years away(in which case, we are seeing light that is more than 10,000 yrs old) Of course the light can be explained away by saying that the starlight was created in transit.

Then you have the evolution and creation theory. I hope the above answers your question. I summarized it as there were a lot of reading articles on it.

"Many who profess to believe the Bible record are at a loss to account for wonderful things which are found in the earth, with the view that Creation week was only seven literal days, and that the world is now only about six thousand years old. " — 3 Spiritual Gifts, 92; Signs, March 20, 1879; first quotation in our tract, "The Age of the Earth" [PG-201]

The seven days of Creation Week were seven literal days — the same kind of 24-hour days we have now. Each day of Creation consisted of a 12-hour nighttime and a 12-hour daytime: "And the evening [night time] and the morning [daytime] were the first day." — Genesis 1:5. Thus each 24-hour day began at sunset. It is for this reason that we are told, "From even unto even [evening to evening — sunset to sunset] shall ye celebrate your Sabbath." — Leviticus 23:32.

So the creation of the earth was in seven literal days not in indefinite periods of time. I hope this is detailed enough for you. I approached it in diff angles from science's and religion's point of view.

Beware the fallacious and fradulent arguments of Creationism (especially Young Earth Creationism).

Theories should be subserviant to evidence, not vice versa.

The evidence says Earth is 4.6 billion years old.

Scientists estimate that Earth formed approximately 4.6 billion (4,600,000,000) years ago.
Our planet began as a lifeless sphere, surrounded by hydrogen and methane and devoid of water; it was nothing like the planet we call our home today.
Certain important events are considered milestones in Earth’s history.

4.6 billion years ago: Earth was created.
4.5 billion years ago: Earth’s moon was formed.
3.8 billion years ago: Bacteria arose.
3.6 billion years ago: A cooling process began on Earth.
3.0 billion years ago: Clouds formed.
2.0 billion years ago: Eukaryotic cells (single cells with a nucleus) evolved.
0.5 billion year ago: Oxygen began to saturate the atmosphere.
