Yes, if the question makes me sit up and think, like this one did.
Some answers are merely for the 2 points, some are hoping for 10+2, but there are also some I give just as my thoughts clear up - writing an answer down further helps the thinking process, especially if the thought is a bit different than usual.
So, if I answer irrespective of the points, the credit goes to the question and the questioner.

I don't know if I'd call it selfishness, because the points really aren't worth anything other than prestige. But they do nonetheless provide a good incentive system for getting us to answer questions.
I think I probably would still answer questions without the points, but more than likely not as much as I do now.
What I'd like to know is how some high-level people are getting like >50% of their answers chosen as best answer. No one's that smart and/or witty. About the only way I can figure is if they're using two logins, and using one to always choose the best answer for the other. Or some sort of online Mutual Admiration Society where a group of friends award each other best answers....

I only cared about getting to level 2 so I wouldn't be restricted in answering.... BUT ASKING shouldn't take points away becuase that makes us THINK first of asking a question, and psychologically makes us hesitate, because of NOT wanting to get below at least level 2 again, OR forces us to give answers to questions to make UP those points! Why should there be any point system..... incentive? IF we didn't like doing this we wouldn't be here in the first place. I think the point incentive makes for a lot of useless, empty one word ansers and takes away from the quality. Take away the point system, and open it up to everything unlimited with more QUALITY answers without so many people just quickly scribbling something so they can get their POINTS. That in itself becomes an obsession and not what the purpose of this site should be.

Well, the points do mean a lot, but having got involved, now it looks like the points are a consequence , not the purpose of it.
It is almost like a population census, it means a lot to the nation as a whole, the statisticians, economists, etc, but a marginal importance to an individual, though the effect is consequential !

I would still answer questions. If you think about it, the points are pretty much meaningless anyways.

the points are not my reason to answer questions.....i like doing it for fun and since i am retired i look forward to finding questions i have a answer or thought about. i guess it makes me feel like i am helping someone a little bit, and that makes me feel ok about myself......

Wrong.
I answer in order to exercise my freedom of speech and express my opinion- screw the points.
