I am moving into a new house and my room smells horribly of cat urine, cat feces, and overall just cat-like. I hate it! What are safe, easy, effective, non-expensive ways to get rid of this odor and keep it from returning? Help me!

Try Nature's Miracle, it's in the pet stores. It neutralizes animal odors. Worked great for our puppy and barfy baby, but we applied it right away. Not sure if it will work for something set in. You can get it in half gallon containers for like $15.

I've also used Arm & Hammer Pet Odor Eliminator (it's a spray for the carpet that foams and dries and then you vaccuum off). That worked well too and it's under $5.

Good luck!

The human nose is inheriantly tuned to these type of smells as well as others as a survival technique.

You can steam clean. You can air it out. You can mask it. But in all likelyhood you will never eliminate it.

I would recommend trying a steam vac and see if that works.

Assuming this fails, replace the carpet. Cheap carpet is not that expensive. When you remove the old carpet, see what it is like underneath. If it is really bad, either clean, replace, or cover with a thick polyeurethane.

If you are just renting, get a quick estimate and confront the landlord. If he refuses, you can check with the local city ordinances to see if he can be required to replace it. By getting a quick estimate using the cheapest carpet available you are showing your landlord it is not an expensive endeavor. If he resists, be sure to note your valid health concerns.

It is likely through the backing of the carpet, into the pad, and may be in the sub-floor, whether wood or concrete.

It needs removed and discarded. The sub-floor can be cleaned and odor removed.

Choose another house before it's too late.
The effort of cleaning it might be too costly and painful...
