Fixture has light sensor on it, so it goes on when it gets dark and goes off in morning light, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. It is 13 watt but suppose throw equiv. of 100 incandesent light bulb (amout of light it throws off is incredible in my opinion). I used this to replace a 70 Watt HP Sodium light. I hope it was a good idea, as I said I am very happy with the amount of light.

I like the CFL bulbs as well. Unfortunately I use many dimmer switches in my house and have to use regular incandescents in those fixtures as dimmable CFL bulbs are still very high priced.

There should be information on the package to tell you expected life of the CFL bulb. Actual time will vary of course. I've had them fail within a few weeks, and have others still working after four years. Repeated on/off cycles and vibrations from the floor above seem to increase the failure rate.

They claim to last from 5,000 to 10,000 hours (average), depending on the type. They also claim that they last 10 times longer than regular incandescent bulbs. I have heard that there is a standard that is used to test the average "life time" of a bulb by turning it "ON" for a specified period of time, then "OFF" and "ON" again over and over until the bulb fails to light.

Fluorescents don't like to go on and off allot. at the end of the bulb is a filament just like on an incandescent that ionizes the mercury in the bulb.

Leaving a fluorescent on will make it last longer.

generally, these small screw in fluorescent last 8 - 10 times longer

I have those in my basement and I have found they do not last as long as advertised I leave it on until it gets black. On reading the lable mine says the extra long life is based on 4 hours a day of use. I don't know if you save anything or not since they are more costly.

A very long time. They probably won't even make those bulbs next time you need to change it.
