I said it before and I'll say it again: Nothing. A rock is hard, so that is its characteristic of a self. A mathematical equation is rigidly set, so that is its characteristic of self. Nothing, which has no characteristics, has no self, but since a complete state of nothing is impossible, since classifying it as a state requires an observing self, I would say with certainty that everything has a self, so the only thing that lacks a self, is nothing.

you are in a philosophy section so expect some incoherent answers. except mine: of course. anyways, yes. humans lack a self in the eastern religions and philosophy. the self is usually identified with the ego, and the ego is the thing that is left behind in meditation. so, after many years of meditation the self disolves and the pure being bubbles to the surface. however, if you define the self to be the being that bubbles to the surface, then you have a self.

when it comes to inanimate objects like tables and chairs, then the self of these objects only exist in the imagination of those who think that these things have selves. the reason why is that we have no way way of knowing whether these thinngs have selves or what some might call consciusness. however, since humans cant experience each others consciousness, its not really clear whether anyone has a self too, except me. So, if you havent figured it out by now, the answer to your question is dependent on one's imagination of the truth, so, what does your imagination tell you?

Do you mean a "sense of self"? If so, then consciousness would be a prerequisite for that. So anything that lacks consciousness lacks a sense of self. The next logical question is tougher: Does anything lack consciousness? From the traditional standpoint, anything that is not alive is not conscious, and therefore lacks "sense of self".

Self, the construct of individuality in an ocean of conciousness. In truth, there is no self, just the illusion of self.
