To prevent sand from causing colic's, blockages of the intestinal tract and diarrhea; mineral oil, bran or Metamucil must be used on a scheduled basis.
1. The quantity of oil recommended is 1/2 gallon per 1000 pound horse. Mineral oil should be administered at 2 to 3 week intervals depending on the prevalence of sand and the horses habit of consuming sand.
2. Bran should be at the rate of from 2 to 4 pounds dry weight and mixed in warm water to form a mush. Bran must be administered more frequently, that is, 2 to 3 times weekly.
3. The Metamucil method requires 2 cups per adult horse mixed in the feed 2-3 times weekly.
In all reality i would discuss this with a vet before further use just in case.

They make many types of sand clear for horses that are at risk for sand colic. The price of useing Metamucil would be more expensive than the products made for horses.
Look at any one feed supply stores or online at any of the horse supply sites and you will find several products for it. Most are not very expensive and far more cost effective than Metamucil.

I do not agree! Metamucil may say it is natural fibre but it is not natural to horses! You will more than likely cause scours by giving them metamucil, and the only way to prevent sand colic is not to feed your horses on sand.

nicely, you should stress feed it as the different poster stated, yet enable's use that as a very last motel. Are you making use of it in pill variety? If convinced, you could blend it in quite strong with grain/sweet feed. you should feed an apple as a take care of, cut back a hollow interior the apple and shove a pill interior the hollow, furnish it on your horse. once you've the powdery variety, you could cut back up an apple(or maybe in case your horse prefers) , dip the apple slices in water(so it sticks), then interior the Metamucil, then feed it your horse. you could also opt to seem into flavored Metamucil.
