i am unsure if i can respond your question so directly, or if i can even answer your specific question; so allow me a few lines and hopefully my blah blah can become your best answer.
soo the obvious fact to a birthday is that, we were born on the date. that for the majority of people in industralized nation's, the birthdayee is the center of attention, often honored, flattered, spoiled rotten or something of the like. the feeling of whichever the action however, is the common idea of "feeling special" i think that alone is why a person feels happy on their birthday. because others acknowledge the date as THEIR day, and if one year a person has "a great birthday = oh-i-felt-so-special-day" then they are likely to look forward to it, plan on it, anticipate it, expect it, and hence have it once again the following year, after year, after year, and so on... although not a parent myself, i'm 20 but are very family oriented, wellll i can think of a few more reasons why a birthday is a day (YOUR ANSWER-->)thanks makes people very happy and why parents (whom are over half of this world's beings) also celebrate it and many PLAN the celebrations and initiate the to-be traditions of "birthday celebrating" For example, on my birthday i personally call my mother and silly me, congratulate her for having me! b/c really she's should be the celebrated one, she had me! then, more gratefully, i thank her for giving birth to me, b/c w/o i wouldnt be here, and without her i wouldnt be able to have birthday memories, nor a special BIRTH date nor cake, parties, OR SMILES to last a lifetime... :)

sometime it makes you happy where some time it doesnt.. really it depend on the type of person you are and what you like to see in that year of your age to happen such as getting a better job or even a better living. For me I find this year being the most challenges of my life and I am not so proud of what i did.. =( *sigh*

It reminds them that they are special on this day. Usually friends and family will honor the birthday person and this makes them happy. Everyone wants to be special.

It's just a figurehead of people's lives to show that they are getting older, and when you're young, it's awsome to be one year older. And plus, everybody's nice (hopefully) on your birthday, simply because that's how it works.

I don't know.
It makes me happy. (: I love being happy about anything! It makes life more interesting, and if you're can't think your birthday as something good. You must see life as black & white.
Optimism is the way to go!
{even if self-dillusioning is required xP}
