Shares are traded on line. All requests for buy and trade are fed into the system. These are then matched by the system and trade is executed. Suppose, if you have placed a buy order for 10 Reliance shares @Rs.1000/- then system will try to find idf there is any matching sell order of Relinace shares @Rs.1000/-. If it fonds say two such sell orders -- one for 7 shares and one for 3 shares, then your buy order will get executed in full.
