Her sister's husband killed her b/c he didn't want her to tell Nate about the affair they were having. In the storyline, he sees a picture of her, as though she's still alive, and there is a coke can, a diet coke maybe, and he said that she didn't drink soda b/c of the caffeine, so it had to be someone else taking the picture and there with her. He takes the photo and basically goes to her sister's house to talk to her about the last time she spoke to lisa (lisa was on the way there) and about the photo. The husband eventually spills and kills himself there. Go to HBO.com, and find Six Feet Under. It's season 4 Ep. 51 - Untitled. It doesn't give a great overview, but you get the point.
It was such a great show, did you know that Bravo is now playing it again? It started Monday night with Ep. 1. I missed some episodes in the first season, so it's great to get back in touch with the Fishers.

A pretty awesome box set of the complete series just came out. It's worth the buy; one of the greatest series ever.

She was having an affair with her sister's husband. He killed her (accidentally?). Her sister overheard his confession to Nate. When he (the brother-in-law) realized his wife knew, he shot himself and died.
