Certain glass bowls reflect the betta's image on the glass, making them think there is another betta around. They will get ready to fight and flare up and get fiesty. You need to get a new bowl, because this in time will overstress your fish and have detrimental health effects.

It could be normal if he is seeing his reflection, or it could be a problem with water quality that is making him uncomfortable. Make sure you aren't feeding too much. Food should never drop to the bottom. Change half of the water today, and again in three days. When you change your water, normally once a week, you should only be changing part of it. Put your betta in a large cup/bowl with at least half of the water, swirl his bowl around and pour the water out. Add your betta and his original water back in and top up with treated tap water or water that has been left out the night before. It is fine to leave some of the mess behind as the beneficial bacteria will live on it until your betta poops again.

Behaviour of Male betas has and always be weired. Sometimes they stay perfectly still for hours on the top, in the centre or at the bottom of the tank. At times they move up and down or around quite violently, probably after seeing their own reflection or otherwise too and also tend to jump out of the water too. If in aquarium with a lid don't worry otherwise cover aquarium or fish bowl with a net so that it doesn't jump out.

Our Betta did freak out also, so we went to the fish store and asked, after we found him dry on the floor, but alive!(WOW) and they said some Betta's just do that and recommend that you have some kind of lid (but not airtight) as the go to the top for air... so we put a square lid on a round bowl just to deter him from jumping... His name is now kamikaze...lol.. good luck, but definately get a lid of some sort....

Sometimes they can see their own reflection in the bowl you are keeping them in. If you look into the bowl or container from the top you can see the reflection on the sides of what is in the bowl .
This is why when you buy them in the store they are in those plastic cups.
Try keeping the bowl dark, out of light so he can see the outside world.

Bowls are not good due to reflection. Try him in a square or rectangular tank. He's trying to scare off his reflection as they are VERY terratorial fish.

I recommend a larger bowl. Mine jumped out to his death and I didn't find him until several hours later, when it was too late. They are fighters, and need room!!
