I think that when a person can no longer function in their daily lives without harming themselves or someone else, they need constant care and supervision.

I know someone who ate some mushrooms (not the normal kind) after that he started acting kinda strange, he was having heart palpitations and talking about weird things. His parents took him to a hospital to have him checked out and he was diagnosed as having cycosis. He was then transferred to another hospital and treated in the mental health ward, was there for three months. Now he is on pills for the rest of his life. Lots of people are ending up in the mental health wards from doing drugs. They become schizophrenic and even bipolar from using drugs. If these people go off their meds. they can become very offensive, walk for miles, act in very unusual manners and have to be hospitalized again for another three months or so, they usually don't go on their own free will, you have to phone the police and have the person picked up and taken to the hospital.

They can be involuntarily comitted if they are a danger to themselves, a danger to others, or so mentally ill that they cannot take care of their own basic needs (food, shelter, etc.). They can be voluntarily comitted if they have any mental diagnosis that would cause a pshychiatrist to recommend a hospital stay, and have insurance or some other means to pay for the hospital stay.

Three questions a psychiatric evaluator will ask themselves before they lock you up:
1. Are you a danger to yourself?
2. Are you a danger to others?
3. Do you understand the consequences of your actions?
An answer of "yes" to any of these qualifies you to one free 72 hour observation in a comfy rubber room and a free one-size-fits-all jacket with wrap-around sleeves. No court order or habeus corpus necessary.

Mainly if you see someone arguing with someone that they only see in the air. Saw a woman 1-2 years ago, who would walk around the block every now then where I work, and literally get into very loud and heated discussions with someone she would see floating a little up in the air and keeping pace next to her. (dead ex-husband??)

They pose a danger to self or others. You can enter voluntarily for other reasons but insurance won't pay if there isn't a clear and compelling reason for inpatient treatment.
