I think you are probably right that this incident did come at the right time and in fact may help more than hinder the Republican Party. Perhaps that is why the Republican leadership did not act earlier on the complaints.
I have seen no evidence that Foley is or was a "child molester". He may have violated some Internet Laws, but even that remains to be seen. He certainly is a hypocrite and immoral. The only decent thing that he did was resign from office.
It now has come out that many in Congress both Republican and Democrat knew that he was a Gay man. On the one hand I respect the fact that they did not "Out" him, but on the other hand considering the stand that the Republicans have taken on Gay issues I feel that both parties participated in a cover up.
If members of Congress knew that he was Gay then I also believe that leadership of the Right Wing Conservative Christian Organizations also knew. Why is it that since they so vehemently attack Gay and Lesbian Citizens they did not say anything about it. I suppose they to are hypocrites and did not want to do anything that would remove one Republican from a seat in Congress.
The event says to me what we already knew that parents and guardians need to be very careful with children because pedophiles do not have distinuishing marks and that regardless of the Party affiliation or religious affiliation people tend to do what is in there best interest regardless if it is hypocritical or not.
I resent the fact that Foley is now trying to excuse his actions by saying that he has a problem with alcohol, he was molested by a clergy member as a youth and he is a Gay man. Many people suffer from alcoholism, have been molested as a child and are Gay and do not try to encourage children to have sex with them. It is black and white he is or had the tendencies of a PEDOPHILE. and should be treated as such..
Either he is sick resulting from unresolved issues in his life or he became to believe that he was so powerful no one could touch him. Regardless of what his problem is he does not deserve to be a member of congress. If it is proven he caused emotional problems to any young person because of his advances I hope he is convicted and sentenced. If he can be convicted for violation of his oath of office I would welcome that also.
I think the Democrats had better be careful or this may backfire on them. Do not forget Pres. Clinton's epidsode with a female Intern. This is not the first time a member of the House or Senate has been accused and found guilty of messing with the Interns and Paiges. The precedent has been set by Democrats and Rebulicans in the past.

I don't see it as a conspiracy.
1. Foley hurts them more with their base. It is hard to claim moral ground when it is revealed that your leadership is ignoring signs that 1 of your members is a child molestor. It is unfortunate for them - if they had taken action years ago, they could have still had a GOP in place appointed by a GOP governor.
2. Woodward closes a lot of arguments for GW, but those few that were still supporting his claims and arguments that Iraq wasn't a monumnetal mistake before won't be changed by Woodward's book.
3. It is being readily revealed that many of the GOP were aware of Foley's previous indescretions. This is the issue that is taking hold, not just that a GOP member was a child molestor.
4. The Dems problems with Iraq haven't been convincing people it was a mistake taken from evidence that was known to be bad, or that it is being poorly ran. The problem is that they do not have a clear response of what they would do now. They have a lot of good ideas, and given the current intel that we are loosing a battle with no end in sight, just about any option would be good, but they need to get a majority of them to agree on that option.

No, look at it as a cumulative disaster. They have no chance to spin their way out of one mess before another one comes along. None of it is going away any time soon. The next shoe to drop will be the uncloseting of gay Repubs in Congress, all of whom voted against gay rights bills. They are all quaking in their boots right now. And the DeLay trial starts soon. It's all hitting the fan.

I am sure he was spanking his monkey for homeland security reasons only. The liberals should not turn this into "What did you know and when did you know it".
What are they going to call it Spanker-gate?
