9+(3x)+8=33
3x=16

You want to space (3) 3-ft windows equally on a wall 33 ft long, having 4 ft at each end.
The unknown distance is the space between the windows
2x+9+8=33

Here's what the picture looks like:
edge <- 4' -> window (3') <- d -> window(3') <- d -> window(3') <- 4 -> edge = 33 feet.

So, 2*d + 3*3 + 2*4 = 33, or
2*d + 9 + 8 = 33, or
2*d + 17 = 33, or
2*d = 16,
so d = 8'.
