That really is a good question and there is no easy answer since we're all individuals. black is OK, we haven't been colored since the 60's, I'm not an African but i am an American of African descent and ***** is more a scientific designation(like Caucasian). I myself prefer person of color.

Absolutely NEVER use the words colored or ***** when referring to us and we happen to be in the room. I'd prefer either black or african american. A mexican woman had the nerve to refer to me as colored one day and it was funny because she was darker than me,lol.I swear ignorant people come in all colors, God bless.

This question will open a whole can of worms because we are very sensitive to what we are called since no name given or taken by us Blacks has ever been appropriate enough to satisfy the masses and cultures that incorporate our race.
Africans call themselves Africans. They identify themselves according to their country and tribe. Yes they are Black.
Caribbean people do not like to be called Afro-Caribbean or African-American. In the Caribbean generally most people call each other Black.
Blacks in America seem to go through name identification changes often and I as a Black Caribbean woman cannot ever come to a conclusion as to what they are.
I personally would prefer anyone who is not Black to call me by my name... that would mean they would have to get to know me.
I think we Black people should just call ourselves what we are and stick to it. Human beings.

"African American" or "Black", of course! "Colored" and "*****" are VERY derogatory, and FOR DAMN sure is damn near demeaning as that other "N-word" (YOU know what word I'm talkin' about!)!
If you were to call me "Colored" or "*****", I'd call you a racist bastard. HOWEVER, IF you were to call me that word that is the fighting word to get ANY person of African descent to beat the s#$% out of you, I would beat you down SO badly that you will be in a 6-week coma! No sh*t!!!

like white people, blacks also have a first name and a family name. u can use any of them to address a black the way u wud for a white. nothing wrong with that. u dont need to adress by a community general name.
