I was wondering what the opening should be for a 36 in pre hung door.

I've been framing for about 14 yrs. I always add 2 inches to the width and frame the opening height at 82 1/2 inches.

So in your case I would frame the opening at 38 wide by 82 1/2 tall

38" then you can square and level the door in the opening. Pre-hung doors are the easiest to hang and they require 38"

Rule of thumb is two inches wider than the nominal width and height of the door. Find specific manufacturer instructions on label attached to door.

Usually 2 inches wider and 2 inches taller unless you plan on adding alot of floor material then you need to alow more room on the hieght

38X83 if it`s a 6-8 door

i think you have to add 2 inches to the over all dimensions of the pre-hung door
