Does god do things because he's benevolent? If yes, then what he wills is because he's right. but...
If he's benevolent, how could he allow 6 million of his chosen people to be incinerated by Hitler, or why did he allow Truman to vaporize 200,000 Japanese men, women and children or Stalin to kill 30m Christians? If he was also omnipotent AND benevolent, then these events could not have happened.
If you counter that man's "free will" caused those events to happen, so don't blame God, then can it be said God is not omnipotent AND benevolent, because he allowed man's free will to reign?
And further, the mere existence of evil in the world makes the existence of a benign god impossible: if god were omnipotent, he could eliminate evil and if he were benign, he would want to do so...another way of saying this:
If god is able to prevent evil but is not willing to prevent evil, then he is not benevolent.
If god is willing to prevent evil but is not able to prevent evil, then he is not omnipotent.
Evil is either in occordance with god's intention or contrary to it. Thus, either god cannot prevent evil or he does not want to prevent evil.

Or did the crap create God? A higher being seems to be the fault or answer to lots of things people as thinking individuals with perceptions on different stances on morality take. I heard someone say something when I was younger and in a bad mood that I remember every now and then when things seem bad or not like they should. "You can't change the world, but don't let the world change you."
Now I believe people can make a positive difference but I take what the person said as that if things get bad you as a thinking being don't have to just turn bad yourself because things seem that way.

What everyone else said + the crap is there because God created humans with a free will. He allows us to choose our selfish desires over Him.

God has never created any crap whatsoever.
God has given us all the freedom, free will to make what we want to make of our existence. But we, in our ignorance, mess it up and then, blame it on God.
It is our own karmas, that create our worlds. You may act consciously or subconsciously to create your world. But when you loose track of your own doings and especially if the results are not to your liking, you may want to find a scape-goat to blame, e.g. your parents, your society, your nation, and ultimately, God.
It is like somebody gifting us a washing machine, which we don't know how to operate, and so, without learning to operate it, we blame the person, who has gifted us the machine. Similarly, when we don't know how to use the greatest gift of freewill, we blame God who has given us the gift.
Pollution, Communal riots, wars, hunger, poverty, etc are due to our own doings. Bad relationships are also result of our handling them in a hazardous manner. But there are other things to be considered.
Just as you have free will, your neighbour has it, too. If you two people have different free will about how your yard-boundry should be like, it is you two people's combined decision as per how to dissolve it /fight it.
If somebody hurts other, it is active person's twisted freewill, that conspires him/ her to do so. But for the person, who got hurt, we always don't have a very rational understanding of why s/he got hurt. I think that our inter-connected karmas become too jumbled up for us to analyse as per how we have created this mess. But this does not mean that one can't analyze it, understand it. It surely takes a responsible, proactive person to put efforts in understanding & cleaning up the mess that one has created.
You may think that the only mistake that God did was to give us free will to make our existence the way we want. But that is also God's greatness. Like an understanding parent, God allows us to make as many mistakes, as we want to make. And that also leaves us free to achieve as many achievements that we want to achieve.
But I guess it becomes difficult at times to understand things clearly and very often, we feel out of control of our lives. But that is what demands efforts from us.

God doesn't create the "crap" - human non-believers do. But the good news is that He loves them all unconditionally.
