I look at what the candidate's stand on the issues are, not how much mud they can fling at their opponent. If I don't like either candidate from the major parties, based on this, I will then look at third party candidates, and find their stand on the issues. If I still can't find someone I like, I just don't vote for that office and leave it blank on the ballot.

My choice usually is to vote straight party, even if I don't care for the candidate of my party. The reason for doing this isn't because it saves me time or I cannot understand the issues, just the opposite, my graduate degree is in government and I've both worked in government and participated in politics for 35 years. But, Congress and state legislatures organize the leadership by party. The party that controls the majority vote decides which issues are heard, as well as what will pass into legislation. So, if one party is better on the issues you care about than the other, vote for that person.

The other choices include not voting in that race, writing in the name of another or your own, or voting for a third party candidate. I've done all those too.

There is a form separately with polling officer, approach him and tell him you don't want to vote, fill the form after completing all formalities of voting like marking the index finger etc. But there is a negative effect you may be hit by the goons of candidates in fray.

Vote for the candidate that is the lesser of two evils. Or, if they seem equally bad, put yourself (or someone you trust) as a write-in candidate. At least you won't have supported the candidate, but you can still say you voted and had a say.

Then don't vote. Sometime when it comes to not agreeing them ,I try to vote for the leasted of evils. Lately I believe it is about time for a new party to start being active in elections

You may still go to the polling station and register your voting and declare in prescribed form to decline to exercises the vote in favour of any body. But, there is no specific symbol for casting a vote as none of the above. It is high time that such a provision is introduced.
